How Eating Disorder Therapy Works:

Dealing with an Eating Disorder can be exhausting — emotionally, mentally and physically, especially when it starts to affect your relationships and self-confidence. Processing your struggles in therapy is like peeling layers from an onion…..eventually we discover the root and when we get to the root, then we can heal. The hard work you will do in session will be worth it when you discover freedom from behaviors that have imprisoned you for far too long.

Connection: Being honest with yourself allows you to be truthful with others. This vulnerability allows you to experience a deeper bond with those who support you. You will learn how secrets feed shame and have kept you away from being fully engaged with life. I will help you to shed the shame and re-engage fully with life!

Coping Mechanisms: Triggers are a part of life. In therapy, we will work at how you’ve coped when disordered eating thoughts and behaviors arose. You will learn how the negative beliefs about your body and your worth affect your life and overall well-being. Working with me, you will learn a new way of responding that empowers you and rewires your brain.

Contentment: When we are able to be truthful with ourselves and others, we find freedom, joy and authenticity. You no longer have to worry about holding a facade to hide the pain. Those closest to you still love you despite your struggles and challenges in life.

Things we can work on to combat your disordered eating thoughts:

  • Reconnect with yourself again.

  • Improve your relationship with food.

  • Learn to manage negative internal dialog.

  • Set healthy boundaries.

  • Finding freedom from secrets that cause conflicts from within.

Your health, happiness and self-worth are worth investing in.

FAQS

What others have wondered about counseling about Eating Disorders

  • Eating Disorders consist of disordered eating thoughts that can have origins in genetics and environment. Eating Disorders can affect one’s ability to function physically, psychologically and socially. Loved ones can not always detect that someone is struggling with their eating disorder because oftentimes, an eating disorder consists of secret or hidden behaviors. Symptoms of an eating disorder may include restriction with food, bingeing and purging (which can take a variety of forms, including excessively exercising, vomiting and using laxatives), counting calories, weighing self frequently and a desire to work out due to feeling guilty after eating a meal.

  • There is no one factor that causes an Eating Disorder. Genetics and environment can play a role in the development of an eating disorder. An example of an environmental factor is one’s involvement in a sport. There are perceptions of how an athlete’s body is suppose to be designed when competing in a sport and as a result, the athlete may go through extreme measures in an attempt to compete successfully.

  • Treatment for an Eating Disorder will be dependent on the client’s needs as a treatment plan and goals will be developed during the first session with me, your Therapist. During the intake session, I will ask about your history behaviors, methods that have and have not work in the past. I also assess for motivation and commitment to the healing journey. It is important to have a treatment team when necessary, which may include a Registered Dietitian that specializes in Eating Disorders and a Psychiatrist. The goal of the treatment is for you to return to having a healthy relationship with food and yourself.

Methods Used in Eating Disorder Treatment:

EMDR

Eating disorders can stem from underlying traumas experienced earlier in life. This unresolved trauma can sometimes manifest later in life as an eating disorder. EMDR is a excelled trauma treatment option for disordered eating because it generates a connection between body, emotions, and thoughts. Using the EMDR protocol, we will resolve the emotional blocks attached to your traumatic memories that may be manifesting as disordered eating patterns.

Mindfulness

If you struggle with an eating disorder. you’ve probably forgotten what it means to be present in your body. Your body has become a place of discomfort and disturbance. Using mindfulness, I will teach you how to feel at home in your body again. Come to an acceptance that you never thought was possible.

Meal Support

Providing meal support is a service that will be available to clients who are ready to explore thoughts and feelings eating in a restaurant/cafe. During this outing, we will discuss how you can cope effectively when you’re eating out with family and friends in a challenging environment.

You can have a balanced relationship with food, body and mind again.
